What is CGI?
CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) is an image or video created from scratch using 2D or 3D software.
It works very similarly to photography, only instead of pressing a button and seeing a photograph, CGI generates images based on the artist’s design, with no creative limitations.
Can CGI be realistic?
Yes, CGI can look photorealistic, depending on the artist’s skill. Many online and in-store images are CGI, often indistinguishable from photos.
The “computerised” look comes from poor-quality work, not CGI itself. Our skilled CGI artists and interior stylists use expertise in lighting, architecture, and trends to create highly realistic images.
What information do you need to model a product?
The more information we have, the better and more accurate the final product will be. To get the best possible result, we would ideally have a sample to model from, as this enables us to capture every detail within the 3D model we create.
As a bare minimum, we would need manufacturers drawings and photos from as many angles as possible. CAD models can also be really useful, and material swatches can help us get as accurate a finish as possible in the absence of a full sample.
How does scanning work?
3D scanning uses photos and lasers to capture an object’s shape and material, creating an exact digital replica. This ensures high accuracy and detail for realistic imagery. The process is quick, taking just 10-15 minutes per item, allowing for fast processing and image creation.
Where can the scanning take place?
Our portable handheld 3D scanner can be used anywhere— either at your location or in our studio. We just need enough space to move around the product and capture all angles.
How long does it take for you to create a CGI image?
The quickest part of the process is creating the 3D model of the product; once this is done, we then move on to creating a room set based on the brief you will have completed before we get to work.
Of course there are additional factors that can impact the time taken to complete an image, but we will always ensure that anticipated timelines are communicated ahead of work starting and also throughout the project so you always know what to expect.
How many times can an asset be re-used?
You can reuse an asset as often as needed. Depending on your budget, we can make modifications like colour changes or more significant updates (e.g., fabric or architectural adjustments) without starting from scratch.
What can I use the CGI images for?
Once delivered, you’re free to use the images as you wish. We can provide the appropriate files for both print and digital use, including large-format printing if specified in your brief.
What are the benefits of CGI vs traditional photography?
We believe that traditional photography absolutely has a vital place in image creation (we have our own in-house photographers in a busy photography studio!). However, CGI offers practical advantages in some cases:
- Set Design: CGI allows us to create custom environments that can be easily adapted, unlike physical sets that require a location or construction.
- Logistics: CGI eliminates the need for a large team and the logistical challenges that can create (travel, accommodation, refreshments, etc.).
- Flexibility & Longevity: CGI images can be easily modified (e.g., product colours, sizes, or configurations) without reshoots, offering more versatile and long-lasting content.
Why is CGI more sustainable than traditional photography?
With traditional photography, there can be a lot of waste created at the end of a project—from set build elements to props. In comparison, when creating an image in CGI there is little to no disposable waste created, meaning that the contribution to landfill is minimal.
Desk-based working removes the need to travel to different locations, and the minimal sample requirement means a vast reduction in delivering items back and forth, all contributing to a reduced carbon footprint involved with a project.
We know that the power involved in creating CGI imagery is our biggest current environmental impact; with that in mind, we invested in solar panels, giving our studio a 40 kW solar generation capacity, meaning we generate upwards of 45,000 kWh of renewable energy each year, and we export excess back to the grid, meaning we are also actively contributing to the production of renewable energy.
